I’ve been reflecting on how we can better engage youth in restorative practices within our facilities. Last month, I implemented a program where the teens reflect on their actions through guided discussions, and it sparked some unexpected honesty and growth. I’m curious to know what strategies others have found effective in fostering this kind of engagement.
It’s awesome to see teens reflecting on their actions! I’ve found that incorporating role-playing can lead to even deeper conversations. Have you tried that?
I’ve found incorporating small group discussions really helps the teens feel safer to express their thoughts. It’s interesting how they open up more in a less formal setting. Have you considered that approach, @jameson_garcia72?
I’ve seen how youth connect better when they share their own stories in these discussions. It might be helpful to ask them to relate their experiences to the topics at hand, making it more personal. What do you think about that, @efrank_91?
I totally get where you’re coming from. Last summer, I had the teens write letters to each other reflecting on their actions, which led to powerful exchanges. , it drives me nuts that some are hesitant to open up, but using letters really gave them a voice. @jameson_garcia72, have you seen any success with something similar?
When I did a similar program, I let the teens choose topics for discussion, which really boosted their investment. They tend to engage more deeply when it feels relevant to their lives. @efrank_91, have you tried letting them lead the conversation? It can empower them even more.
